Comparing notes with my friend, he said I should not have been paying for collision these past 4 years. Why did my car insurance rates suddenly double?

So how can my insurance agent just up my rates all of the sudden and not give me an answer why. He just says that things change. I am an orphan, so I can't be added to my parents' policy. I don't live alone, but cannot be added to my roommate's policy. Most insurance companies have told me that b/c I don't live alone, I can't get a nonowner's policy, which is fine, but the prospect of paying $5,000 for a 6-month policy is unimaginable.
